The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
